The Alan Turing Institute is the United Kingdom's national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, headquartered at the British Library in London. Named after the pioneering mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing, the institute brings together world-class researchers from its university partners — including Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, UCL, and Warwick — to advance the frontiers of data science and AI. The institute's urban analytics programme is of particular relevance to smart city development, conducting research into how data science can improve understanding of urban systems, from transport and mobility patterns to housing markets and energy consumption. The Turing's work on digital twins for cities, responsible AI governance frameworks, and privacy-preserving data sharing methods has been influential in shaping how cities worldwide approach data-driven decision-making. The institute also contributes to open-source tools and methodologies that enable researchers and practitioners globally to apply AI to urban challenges.
